Growing up, I only heard of the chiropractor for “back problems.” Well, Raye the doula is here now & I’m here to tell you that it’s for far more than your back…and it’s NOT this “loud, back cracking & snapping” procedure I’d thought of. Adjustments are pain free and gentle enough for a newborn! Chiropractic care is beneficial for ALL folks, but especially those trying to conceive, pregnant or babies! Let me tell you how…
Chiropractors use the art and science of adjusting misaligned joints (subluxations) of the body (especially of the spine) which reduces spinal nerve stress and therefore promotes health throughout the body.
As you can see, your reproductive system (both male and female) is directly correlated with the lower spine. If you are trying to conceive it’s important that you and your partner both be at your best health! By getting chiropractic care, this will help you get there.
But, it doesn’t just stop there. When pregnant, chiropractic care has just as many benefits.
I didn’t start getting adjusted until my third trimester with my first pregnancy. I will never wait that long again! (We get adjustments weekly, but should we stop- I’m going back as soon as I get a positive pregnancy test!) Knowing what I know now, and my experience- the key to a smoother pregnancy is in your spine. A lot of us have been fooled into thinking that we HAVE to suffer from a terrible experience being pregnant.. this isn’t the case! Yes, it can be a trying time-but a lot of the aches(in my pelvis,) pains (like sciatica nerve pain) and symptoms (acid reflux, nonstop nausea) disappears once I started getting adjusted! I was so amazed. I went from complaining that I “felt like my baby was out of room!” to being very comfortable pregnant. Getting my pelvis aligned and open allowed me to enjoy my third trimester more than any other-which most people complain about it being the worst!
Quote from the American pregnancy association: “Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy.
When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint.
A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery.”
Women who receive regular chiropractic care experience lower labor pains and decrease labor times! Chiropractic care has also been known to help breech babies get into proper positioning. I recommend ALL of my doula clients (fertility and birth) to begin care as soon as possible.
Because I was already receiving care during my pregnancy, my newborn was included in the care plan once he was Earthside. Traveling through the birth canal, and the labor and delivery can sometimes cause misalignments in newborns. These misalignments may show up in symptoms like “colic,” reflux, allergies, frequent ear infections, poor sleeping and even trouble nursing. By getting your babies adjusted, you give them an instant boost to their immune system and health! My son now hops right up on the table for his weekly adjustments. I’ll do a separate post on the changes I’ve seen in my son after an adjustment. It’s mind blowing how well they do the body!!
